Mylène, what is your educational and professional background that led you to become an agricultural notary?
I studied law at university and then got my degree in notarial law, but I really specialized in agricultural law through my practice in my current studies at Montérégie. Because there is little training in agricultural law, I served my apprenticeship, as they say, working alongside my agricultural clients on a day-to-day basis.
For several years I chaired the agricultural law committee of the PME INTER Notaries network. I have been on this committee with other colleagues working in agricultural law for the last 10 years, and we meet monthly to discuss issues relevant to our practice and improve our knowledge in this field.
What is your job about?
I support farming families in all aspects of their lives: financing, purchasing and selling farms, filing with the Quebec Commission for the Protection of Agricultural Lands (CPTAQ), will planning, etc. The files on farm transfers as part of the integration of the next generation of farmers remain my favorite to this day. Being in contact with these young people who make up the new generation of farmers and witnessing their passion for agriculture both fascinates and excites me. It is truly enriching work, full of humanity; This is the priority for me.
How does your daily life at work look like?
Busy! No day is the same and I love that. There are as many problems and different realities as there are farming families that need to be supported.
